The Square

The Worshipful Master'sjewel is the Square, which is used to ascertain if the angle of stone is true and correct. As such his jewel symbolizes virtue. Since virtue denotes purity and righteousness of being, so should the Master be such a guiding light as he leads the Brethren “from darkness to light”.

The Level

The Senior Warden's jewel is the Level, which symbolizes that all Masons meet on the level, without regard to social, political, or religious beliefs or status. Equality among men is essential to ensure that the cement of Brotherly Love can be spread evenly and thoroughly so that the raw materials of the Temple can be assembled into a single, beautiful structure from which the Masonic light can emanate. .

The Plumb

The Junior Warden's jewel is the plumb, which is used to ascertain the alignment of a vertical surface. As such, his jewels symbolizes the uprightness of conduct, expected of all Masons. A less known, but just as important attribute of the plumb is it’s personal nature and it should only be applied to oneself, never used to judge others.

From The East (September 2010)

Labor Day is upon us, traditionally viewed as being the symbolic end of summer, a day of rest for the working folks and their families, the return to school, the start of the National Football League season and that of the NCAA.

September also brings along the 161st Annual Communication of Grand Lodge , which begins at 1:00 pm on Friday, Sept.24 and ends Sunday, Sept. 26. You must be a Master Mason to attend. A brief description of resolutions and legislation is listed in this bulletin. In particular, I’d like to remind the brethren that the carried over Recommendation No.5 (Procedures on Ballot Box Rejections) of our Past Grand Master Larry Adamson is on the agenda. This troublesome issue is present in many Masonic Lodges, and it is hoped that a resolution will be achieved to prevent a single member from blackballing prospective candidates for inappropriate reasons. Clearly, Grand Lodge has stated that PRIVATE objection to the Master is the PROPER way to avoid an ugly situation, and NOT by use of the cube in the ballot box which is considered a cowardly act and does not show good Masonic conduct.

The Community Masonic Lodge

It is at the community level that men are made Masons and where the Fraternity’s impact should be felt the most. It is the mission of every local Lodge to shape men into positive role models and leaders for their communities. It is not enough to merely “make Masons” in the physical sense.

Lodges must accept the responsibility for guiding and educating their members. This process must be pro-active, holistic in scope, and thorough. Being a Mason is a lifelong commitment to better oneself. A process that will lead to a proper and full understanding of what Freemasonry means, why it is important, and why it has a timeless relevance.

As the great Mahatma Gandhi said “we must become the change we want to see”. Freemasonry provides the tools, framework, and support system for this change to occur, but only in so far that the local Lodge ensures that this great teaching system is properly implemented.

A mighty task that cannot be done without an active and passionate membership. We must not neglect our local Lodge for it is the foundation stone of our great Fraternity.

Hiram Award 2010

The highest honor that any Lodge may present a Master Mason is known as the Hiram Award. Traditionally, one can not ask for this award, it must be earned. Each individual to whom the award is given has demonstrated unparalled devotion, service, and support of his Lodge.

Mission Lodge No. 169 is proud to present the Hiram Award to Worshipful Brother Bruce McKelvie, P.M. W.B. Bruce has been an active member of Mission Lodge since 1966. His biography may be read here, and the photo-gallery from the event may be viewed here, or by going to the tab Mission Lodge > News.
